Emergency call on a Friday night. Girl was fresh out of psych ward and parents were at a loss as to what to do. Chuck showed up at family home an hour away at 8:00 PM to find girl curled up on a tight knit ball and non-communicative (catatonic). Chuck had parents and other family members go elsewhere, and Chuck sat down by the girl and started talking. Chuck talked for more than hour before the girl finally responded. The girl unclenched from her balled up position, and started sharing her struggles w/ Chuck. Chuck supported girl and helped her rearrange her crisis struggle into a more hopeful, palatable way of looking at her situation. Chuck determined the client was clinically safe for the night. Chuck left, w/ parents telling him they’d find their insurance provider help for their daughter. Three weeks later Chuck received a call from the mom stating “we’ve taken [girl/client] to several therapists and also tried a couple different day treatment programs, and it turns out she only wants to work Chuck”. Parents hired Chuck to fix their daughter. The girl/client was crippled with anxiety, self-harming daily, unable to go to school, not sleeping, and had suicidal ideations. We had to get clever with brining this girl/client her solutions, as the girl was willing to meet with Chuck but her struggle and anxiety had her apprehensive still, she was fearful of what others would think if they knew she was struggling and getting professional help. In brainstorming w/ the parents, we determined the girl/client was comfortable meeting Chuck lowkey style at a public library- Chuck and the girl/client began meeting at the library, in the common public area, w/ the girl/client sitting on the ground at a low table drawing and Chuck sitting 8 feet away in a chair, with causal conversation ensuing. Chuck and girl/client met in this fashion a few times in the first week of counseling engagement, until the girl agreed to meet with Chuck in a private library study room so they could have more privacy, under the outward perceived notion that she was having an academic tutoring session w/ her “tutor” Chuck. In the privacy of a library study room, Chuck and girl/client got to therapeutic work in quick fashion. With Chuck’s help, the girl/client put forth the effort to change, and in 7 short weeks she was fully functioning in life again, back at school, sleeping, anxiety no longer crippling her, no suicidal ideations. This girl/client reaches out to Chuck randomly for the past 7 years when life struggles ensue to work through said struggles w/ Chuck. Chuck communicated w/ parents regularly while treating their daughter, keeping them abreast of her struggles/successes, and educated parents on best practices they can be executing to help their daughter heal.
